Yanni Hufnagel: America’s top basketball recruiters

Yanni Hufnagel is one of the country’s most respected college basketball recruiters in recent history. Yanni Hufnagel has been fascinated with coaching since he was a child, reading every book he could find and acting out the plays using basketball figures. During his teen years, he began calling games for his local public television station. Yanni’s broadcast partner knew that Yanni would become a coach or sports announcer one day.

Yanni Hufnagel’s knowledge is evidence when he speaks about the sport. He was recently named as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Nevada. While studying at Cornell University, he became the school’s basketball manager. During the summer, he was able to intern with the New Jersey Nets. Upon graduation, one of his Nets co-workers put him in contact with Oklahoma’s Coach Jeff Capel. Coach Jeff Capel had been looking for an assistant coach for some time. Yanni Hufnagel traveled to Oklahoma for an interview and was then offered the position.

In 2009, Coach Jeff Capel recommended Yanni Hufnagel for the head coach position at Harvard. Yanni Hufnagel was instead appointed as a volunteer assistant coach, that came with an unpaid intern’s salary. Once he got the job, he hit the road recruiting all the players he could find. Yanni Hufnagel has coached at some of the top-tier level schools in the country such as Cornell, Oklahoma, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Berkeley and Nevada.

Yanni Hufnagel graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. In 2010 he received a master’s degree in Adult Higher Education with a focus on Intercollegiate Athletic Administration from Oklahoma. Many within the basketball community believe Yanni Hufnagel will have his choice of jobs either as an assistant coach or head coach. Yanni Hufnagel continues to help build stronger basketball programs.
