The Successful Philanthropist: James Dondero of Dallas, TX

For James Dondero, having a successful career in credit and finance was not enough for him. He needed to do something better with his life; something that would touch the hearts of many people. Perhaps put a smile on the faces of young children, teenagers, young adults and even adult residents of Dallas. He, thus, went ahead and decided to be a regular donor to various charities that help better the current situation of Dallas. Jim donations give the children a brighter future through access to quality education, mentorship and internship opportunities.

When the name James Dondero is first mentioned, the next thing that comes to mind is the co-founder and president of Highland Capital Management. This is a firm that is worth $14.9 billion together with its affiliates. But Jams is many things. He serves on the board of directors at American Banknote, CCS Medical and Cornerstone Healthcare and MGM studios among other successful institutions.

For more than 30 years, James has been working diligently investing in credit and equity. He has worked at GIC, which is a subsidiary of Protective Life. Here, he worked as a chief investment officer where he helped grow the business to an investment worth$ 2billion in just a short period. Mr. Dondero is one of the pioneers of the Collaterized Loan Obligation. He also worked at America Express where he managed their fixed income funds.

James Dondero graduated from University of Virginia where he studied Accounting and Finance. To even better his skills in the fields of finance and accounting, James went further to become a Certified Management Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst. His skills and experience have seen him rise in the career ladder to the highest level. He currently lives in Dallas, TX, overseeing strategies of Highland Investment Capital.

As mentioned earlier, James gives with an open heart. Among the charities that he and his company, Highland Investment Capital, have been regular contributors include the Capital for Kids, Dallas Zoo, George W Bush Presidential Library and Institute, Education is Freedom Organization, and SMU’s Highland Capital Management Tower Scholars Program. It is worth mentioning that donations associated with Jim have received several tributes and awards. One of the award was the Morningstar’s 5-star designation for Global Allocation in 2014.
