George Soros: Giving Without Motive

George Soros has never been afraid to give away his fortune to a worthy cause. On Opensocietyfoundations.org, there is a glowing piece about the generosity of the savvy businessman. Soros, himself, founded the Open Society Foundations to combat prejudice, support freedom of expression, call for more accountable governments, and to promote equality. Since the launch of his hedge fund in 1970, he has poured a portion of his income into these worthy endeavors. The Open Society Foundations work with countless organizations individuals all over the world to promote these causes and more.

Soros may be a successful businessman, but his philanthropic life with the Open Society Foundations reflects a difficult time in his upbringing. Being of Jewish heritage, Soros was born in Hungary in 1930. When the Nazi army began to occupy Hungary, Soros’s family needed to find a way to survive. They went through to find false identifications and used them to survive. They even found some papers for other families and saved the lives of many of their neighbors. Suddenly, Soros learned what it meant to survive and push back against persecutors. He uses this as a prime principle in his work with the Open Society Foundations.

Soros remembered his hard early life when he started working in the business world. He has always been willing to put himself to work to further a cause. He worked through school and immigrated to the United States to start a successful career. When the time came to give back in honor of his roots he did not shy away from the opportunity. He recently donated $18 billion to the Open Society Foundations to help fund his causes. This is only the latest in a string of very generous donations, to the tune of over $30 billion.

A recent article on Jpost.com entitled “George Soros and the Demonization of Philanthropy” discusses some of the drawbacks that Soros has experienced because of his giving. The Jerusalem Post points out that many have attributed ill will to the generosity that Soros has displayed. It seems that there are many damaging conspiracy theories spread in a fear of the power that such large-scale giving can attribute. The problem is that Soros is not interested in any type of world domination, merely the formation of a better society through socially conscious programs foundations. People have been warned that individuals in this type of power can control public opinion. Even if this theory were correct, Soros’s foundation has given away billions of dollars in over 100 countries to help the public. His philanthropy is not interested in going with the grain of society or bowing down to tyrannical notions. He has supported many unpopular causes and fought for them vehemently because they were the right thing to do.

While Soros may have nay-sayers, the fact remains that he has made a huge mark on global society. His philanthropy is one of a kind and geared towards a better tomorrow. In fact, Soros will go down and one of the men that fought the hardest for humanity.  and follow him Twitter.com
